LAS VIRGENES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT STAFF SALARIES & BENEFITS/COMPENSATION

ADDED PAGE SHOWING "AVERAGE" AND "MEDIAN" LVUSD TEACHER BASE SALARIES. LVUSD "Teachers" have generous base salaries. Since proponents of the Proposed "LVUSD Educator Townhomes" incorrectly argue LVUSD teacher salaries are "low", click HERE to see a revised spreadsheet which now includes a new page with just "Teachers" on it. Using names & monthly salaries from LVUSD, 2/22/2010, we calculated an "average annual salary" and a "median annual salary" for LVUSD Teachers. (We're awaiting 2011 data.) LVUSD Teachers (and other staff) enjoy GENEROUS BASE SALARIES (and may receive additional compensation(s) (e.g. for teaching summer school, overtime, etc.). Further, in addition, they also have posh BENEFITS and exorbitant PENSIONS plans. LVUSD staff, including its teachers, are WELL COMPENSATED (and we believe they should consider themselves fortunate to have jobs, given the national, state and local record high unemployment rates).
On 2/5/2011, we requested current LVUSD staff name and exact salary information, and we will publish it when we receive it from LVUSD.

LVUSD Superintendent Zimring's base salary (as of 2/22/2010, the latest list we have available) $15,666.67/month which is $188,000/year -- that's almost half of President Obama's salary.

LVUSD SALARIES & BENEFITS EXCEEDED INFLATION BY A WHOPPING 78%!
LVUSD salaries & benefits skyrocketed from ~$37 million in 1994/95 to ~$82 million in 2008/09 -- a 121% increase. Yet during that same period, student enrollment was relatively level: 10,718 in 1994/95, to a high of 12,170 in 2003/04, and it has declined each year since then to 11,664 in 2008/09. Given inflation, the expected increase in salaries & benefits should have been 43%, not 121%. That's 78%- more than inflation called for. The chart below shows actual salaries & benefits in red, with what actual salaries & benefits should have been, had LVUSD adhered to inflation, in green.

LVUSD STAFF SALARIES AND BENEFITS TOTALS
A preliminary look at year-end annual reports indicate that "Certified Salaries", "Classified Salaries", and "Employee Benefits" have risen dramatically, while enrollment numbers have remained stable and/or decreased.
CANLT will publish as many of the Audited Annual Year-End Financial Reports as it obtains them from LVUSD and as time permits.budgets and annual reports that it can obtain from LVUSD (starting with 1990), depending upon availability and as time permits, in the Budgets and Actuals section.
Here is a preliminary look at what appears to be the salary & benefit total trending over the years. It is not all-inclusive, but we will be adding to it as more information becomes available to us. Note the total salary & benefit increase:
-- in 1994/95: Total of $37.4 million
-- in 2008/09: Total of $82.6 million
with apparent declining in-district enrollment and no apparent significant increase in the numbers of teachers.

LVUSD says its employees have taken "a 5.4% pay reduction" (May 2010). LVUSD employees have NOT taken "salary cut", as in the type generally taken in the private sector. A true salary cut would be to continue to provide the SAME level of services at a LESSER salary rate. LVUSD's "pay reduction" is via "furlough days", days staff will not work and thus for which they will not be paid. LVUSD's computed hourly or daily rates of pay remains the same as before, they will just work fewer days and so their overall annual income will drop slightly due to working fewer days. A true "salary cut" would be to work at a lesser hourly, daily, monthly, or annual amount -- whatever the actual pay rate basis is -- while continuing to provide the same level of services, NOT what LVUSD is doing.
